Experiential Education at Mandela

“Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children's health (and also, by the way, in our own).”

— Richard Louv

Mandela International Magnet School prioritizes the importance of experiential education. Whether on overnight or day trips, we believe students learn best when they extend the classroom to the world around them.

Mandela has a long history of bringing learning outdoors. Every year, each grade level takes a trip that connects with history, art and/or science, and community-building.

  • 7th-10th graders experience camping trips with our partners at Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions.

  • Juniors have a tradition of going to the United World College Spring Conference.

  • Seniors travel to Buena Vista, Colorado, for their senior trip in the late spring.

Fees

These experiences do cost money—sometimes a significant amount. Because the school hopes all students participate, MIMS advises that families budget for these expenses.
